The L.A. Women's Tennis Championships presented by Herbalife has hosted some of the most memorable and historical matches in the 39-year history of the popular southern California Sony Ericsson WTA Tour stop. Beginning in 2004, the annual Tier II event has been hosted by The Home Depot Center, on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson, California after a 21-year run at the Manhattan Beach Country Club. The 56-player draw features the top female tennis players in the world. In just the last two decades, eight players who have held the WTA's No. 1 ranking have been tournament champions of the L.A. Women's Tennis Championships, including Kim Clijsters (2005 & 2003), Lindsay Davenport (2004, 2001, 1998 & 1996), Serena Williams (2000 & 1999) and five time champion (a tournament record) Martina Navratilova. Last year, Ana Ivanovic became the fourth women to earn the crown at the 8,000-seat tennis stadium at The Home Depot Center. The L.A. Women's Tennis Championships presented by Herbalife is part of the prestigious Olympus US Open Series, which links the summer hard-court tournaments to the famed US Open. This year's L.A. Women's Tennis Championships marks the fifth year players competing in the Olympus US Open Series tournaments will be vying for bonus prize money at the US Open. Players competing in the "summer season" of tennis at the participating Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournaments will receive Olympus US Open Series points, which will ultimately earn the series winner the opportunity to double her US Open prize purse. Since purchasing the event prior to the 2004 tournament, Los Angeles-based sports and entertainment presenters AEG has aggressively marketed women's tennis' traditional tour stop with popular promotions, including bobblehead doll, giant tennis ball and racket giveaways; exclusive hospitality parties; and the annual fireworks extravaganza on Saturday night, all leading to record-setting attendance figures each year. The L.A. Women's Tennis Championships presented by Herbalife is truly the "Ultimate Tennis Celebration."

bye mean she's through to the next round, i guess. that's how i understand it. it's like a free pass. it is usually given to the seeded player. by the way, tough draw for Dina, huh? it's not an easy road for her but hopefully she'll be able to win this again! Do your best Dina. God will do the rest. God bless you and take care.

me too. and by the way, you can delete it deevee. i am sad today but also happy because Dina finally speak up on her ranking. she's too strong to answer all this intrigues about Serena and even JJ. well, she has her point. here's her say: Defending champion and world No. 1 Dinara Safina hasn’t run into Serena Williams lately. She has heard what the Wimbledon champion and others have had to say about her qualifications to be the top-ranked player on the WTA Tour. “ Ranking is ranking. I didn’t do the ranking system,” Safina said. Safina just answered questions pleasantly. “If she (Williams) has some questions she can give those questions to the WTA, who is doing the ranking system,” Safina said. “It’s just the result of how you play the whole year, not just the four Grand Slams. I’ve been playing the whole year and I’ve been having great results all through the Grand Slams. If she has some questions she can go to the WTA.” Safina said she doesn’t feel any urgency to win a Grand Slam, that “it’s just a matter of time and one day it will happen.”When told that Jelena Jankovic said last week that to be No. 1 “you have to be beating the Williams sisters,” Safina smiled and shrugged and said, again, “the ranking system is not only if you beat Serena Williams and Venus Williams. It’s based on how you play the whole year, and what is their record.” i like the way she answer. Do your best Dina. God will do the rest. I know God will be there by your side and He will never leave you. He's just there to help you when you feel down. For sure, after all these sufferings, He will reward you. Something really special indeed. Trust Him. God bless you!

well, i agree with you! as Dina said before, she didn't do the ranking. they are being bias for saying that she don't deserve this spot. whatever. but for now, i am happy Dina won against Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 6-4. next she'll face Zheng Jie. did you notice what's in her left hand? it was some kind of bandage. but for what? what's the purpose of that? Do your best Dina. God will do the rest. God bless you and take care of yourself.

JJ please less talk and more results !! she made a nice year in 2008 but now she's far to be number one. If her objectif is beating WS great but she will not be number one for this.... ridiculous comments from a girl who was in the same situation of Dinara last year !!
