Russian Dinara Safina initiates her campaign to become No 1. Nicole Jeffery, Sydney International | January 13, 2009 Article from: The Australian
ON a day when five of the world's top 20 female players departed meekly from the tournament for reasons of illness, injury or poor form, Amazonian world No 3 Dinara Safina offered an impressive counter-balance as she initiated her campaign to become the world's No 1 player.
The Russian, 22, who has developed into an intimidating package of height, power, athleticism and composure, is regarded as one of the leading contenders to claim the title this season after she surged irresistibly into the top five last year.
Yesterday she was the dominant force as she dismantled Romania's world No36 Soran Cirstea 6-2 6-1.
After warming up with a finals appearance with her brother Marat at last week's Hopman Cup in Perth, Safina arrived in Sydney determined to play more aggressively and began as she intends to continue in both the Sydney and Melbourne tournaments.
Against a shot-maker like Cirstea, Safina stepped in and commanded the court.
"She pushed me to do this," Safina said.
"Because with her if I would have a slow start I would just run and bring the ball back. So it was a good chance for me to force myself to push even more to be much more aggressive."
It was a much more passive start for some of the other notables.
In what has become an unwanted tradition for the Sydney tournament, three leading players withdrew yesterday with various ailments, taking the cautious approach to their preparation for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, starting next Monday.

Safina reaches Sydney's semifinal January 14, 2009
Second-seeded Dinara Safina reaches the semifinals in Sydney with a 6-3, 6-4 win over France’s Alize Cornet. Cornet saved four match points in the final game before Safina closed the match out.
But Safina called her play “a disaster” and said Cornet could have won the match if she were a little more experienced.
“She gave me the match,” Safina said after trailing 4-1 in the second set. “It’s not the way I want to win the match. I want to win it by myself, not that the girl loses to me. I don’t like the way I’m playing. Just totally bad.”
Safina next faces Japan’s Ai Sugiyama, who made it to the semifinals when former U.S. Open champion and fifth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia withdrew with an abdominal strain

Ai has beaten some pretty tough players, but, than there's Dinara! I think Ai will put up a pretty good fight, but Dinara will have it undercontrol! Easy win

Dinara won over Ai Sugiyama 6-4 7-6 So in final the Russian derby match again Dinara VS Elena Dementieva in the Sydney ....re-match olympic 2008......DAVAI Dinara!!!!! After match interview www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/1/newsroom/stories/?ContentID=2883"I played a solid game when she served for the second set at 5-4, then I played a solid tie-break too," Safina stated. "It was so hot; that's not an excuse though, because it's the same for us both. But I still don't feel I was playing my best, and it shows I've improved enough that I can play at 50% and still reach the finals." With her excellent net game - she has been ranked No.1 in doubles - and her incredible retrieving skills, Sugiyama is often tricky for the top players, having 20 career wins over the Top 10, and going as high as No.8 herself. Safina said she was helped by her coach's advice, on staying aggressive no matter what. "Sometimes you play a match and you don't see things," Safina said. "My coach sometimes comes out and tells me I'm playing completely the wrong way. Today I felt something was wrong. He told me to just not back away from the baseline - he told me, 'Go back to Sydney, just don't run outside of Sydney.'" 'Go back to Sydney, just don't run outside of Sydney.' Outside of Sydney would of been a looooong way away! Lol. I didnt get to see the match because of the stupid television station, decides to have the rights to broadcast both the Kooyong Classic and Medibank international, i was so annoyed!!! But i did get to see Federer play which was good. I did however, get to see about 1 game of Safina's match in the second set and she seemed to be playing very well. I really don't like Sugiyama, not nice to say but there's something about her that really bugs me and i don't like her, so im really happy Dinara won and she's absolutely going to give it to Elena tomorrow
