The second-seeded two-time major runner-up Safina whipped France's Mathilde Johansson 6-1, 6-3, while the fourth-seeded two-time Grand Slam event finalist Dementieva held off wild card and fellow Russian Anastasia Pivovarova 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 on the hardcourts at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. Dementieva beat the Australian Open and French Open runner-up Safina in last year's gold medal match at the Summer Games in Beijing.
Dementieva reached the final here in Miami five years ago.
Eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova joined her compatriots Safina and Dementieva in the third round by overcoming Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 on Day 3.
The former U.S. Open champion Kuznetsova titled here back in 2006.

All 32 seeds here received opening-round byes.
Serena Williams won her second straight and fifth overall Miami title last year by besting Jelena Jankovic in the final. Williams also titled here from 2002-04.
The Australian and U.S. Open champion Williams' big sister Venus won this event in 1998, 1999 and 2001. Venus defeated Serena in the '99 finale.

Dinara lost to Stosur in Miami Miami | March 29, 2009
Dinara Safina had "a disaster match" when she was beaten 6-1, 6-4 in the third round by Australia's Sam Stosur.
"Just a bad match for me. It was just a disaster match," Safina said. "I started to play a little better at 6-1, 3-0 but it was too late. I put everything in her hands.
"She's a great player. She played very good, but from my side, I just can say it was sad the way I played. No excuse from my side. Just basically I wasn't playing."
Safina missed a chance to become the women's world number one by winning the tournament.
"Of course it's very disappointing," Safina said. "That's what I'm playing for. I want to be there. Suddenly I go to the court and I don't even fight for it. It's just bad behavior from my side. The champions, they don't do this.
"It's a good punishment for me. I have to get smarter." Safina also said she needed to have some time off after a heavy load of matches and travel for months, having left her best tennis on practice courts.
"It's strange. I feel pretty good practising," she said. "Once I step on the court it changes. I'm very passive. It's disappointing. I'm not playing my tennis. I'm pushing myself and practising hard.
"I will have some time off now. I just want to get back the hungriness for tennis."
